This week we're focusing on Solitary Confinement – in the U.S. and worldwide.
Most egregious is the fact that children/youth under 18 are being held in Solitary confinement in the U.S. Laws allow this.
There are a number of focus points. Please see attached links on solitary confinement:
U.S. facts (http://solitarywatch.com/facts/faq/)
There are more than 80,000 men, women, and children in solitary confinement in prisons across the United States, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics.
Numerous studies have documented the harmful psychological effects of long-term solitary confinement, which can produce debilitating symptoms.
Since the 1990s, the U.N. Committee Against Torture has repeatedly condemned the use of solitary confinement in the U.S.
The Committee Against Torture, official governing body of the UN Convention Against Torture that the United States ratified in 1994, has recommended that the practice of isolation be abolished. The UN Human Rights Committee has, in 1992, suggested that prolonged isolation may amount to a violation of international human rights law. Similarly the UN committee on the Rights of the Child has urged for an end to the use of solitary confinement against minors.
The U.N. Convention Against Torture defines torture as any state-sanctioned act “by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person” for information, punishment, intimidation, or for a reason based on discrimination.

Children in Solitary: A 2012 Human Rights Watch report notes: “Youth offenders often spend significant amounts of their time in US prisons isolated from the general prison population. Such segregation can be an attempt to protect vulnerable youth offenders from the general population, to punish infractions of prison rules, or to manage particular categories of prisoners, such as alleged gang members. Youth offenders frequently described their experience in segregation as a profoundly difficult ordeal.”

The United Kingdom has approximately as many total prisoners as the United States has in solitary confinement. While difficult to estimate, the UK likely has no more than 500 people in solitary confinement at any given time. …

Re: Creating Ripples: Solitary Confinement
What does one hope to achieve when locking another human being (or any living being) into a box? The belief that some kind of good or learning will come from it is ignorant, to say the least. People learn and change and grow through interaction and investigation (with the support of others) - not from being deprived of sensory, social and mental stimuli.

Solitary confinement does not work. Prison is supposed to be a place to rehabilitate people and get them ready for Life when they are released, but what happens when you confine somebody for decades and then just release them into the world?
We should have a World based on constructive and supportive methods.

Re: Creating Ripples: Solitary Confinement
Desteni is doing a project on solitary confinement this week. While many agree that this practice is extreme and may even create more problems than it intended to solve, I got to considering the origin of this practice. Whereas humans used to be “tied” together via the unified consciousness field, solitary confinement may have been effective in forcing, through isolation, the person to realign with the unified field and, thus, society. Unfortunately, with the removal of the unified consciousness field in a single moment, such a realignment is not going to happen, rendering solitary confinement useless in this sense.
I wonder if there is any practical purpose to this practice within the context of today's world?
